New hope of rare earth waste

2020-10-31 16:30:03

Ree4eu project has developed a closed-loop system from permanent magnet waste to new products. The process is based on two new technologies.

First, the extraction of ionic liquid makes rare earth elements be removed from wastewater in the form of oxalate. Second, high temperature electrolysis allows the production of rare earth alloys from the rare earth oxide mixture obtained from the calcination of rare earth oxalate rare earth mixture by ion liquid extraction.

"The beauty of this project is its customized electrolysis process because it eliminates the separation and transformation steps of single rare earth oxide or halide in China's major mining processes," explains Anna Maria Martinez, project coordinator

She pointed out that these customized new technologies can treat the waste containing rare earth produced by permanent magnet into waste generated in the process of permanent magnet manufacturing, or the waste permanent magnet produced by the scrap products can be treated as intermediate alloy containing rare earth elements.

The product is made of continuous casting process "strip casting", and the rare earth master alloy is finally obtained, which is used to manufacture permanent magnet, and the fully closed loop permanent magnet recovery process is realized.

Martinez believes that many single mining steps are avoided, making innovative technologies a more effective and environmentally sustainable process. In addition, the "competitive" closed-loop permanent magnet recovery process from waste containing rare earth to new products of rare earth permanent magnet has been demonstrated in the pilot scale.

The researchers report that new technologies have reduced energy consumption by about 35 per cent compared to primary production in China.

Martinez is proud of this new milestone. She said no one has been able to use this scale of rare earth waste resources to show the entire permanent magnet value chain. "Our work opens the possibility of establishing an important value chain in Europe and provides a promising opportunity for rare earth recycling enterprises."
